Rolex Air-King Ref. 5500 Automatic Watch
A classic example of one of Rolex’s longest-running and most understated sports watches, this vintage Rolex Air-King Ref.
The watch features the timeless stainless-steel Oyster case measuring approximately 34mm, offering the clean proportions and versatile profile for which the vintage Air-King has become known. Its straightforward dial layout, applied hour markers and central sweep seconds embody Rolex’s functional, no-frills approach to the Air-King during this period.
Inside is the Rolex Calibre 1520, a robust automatic mechanical movement from Rolex’s highly regarded 15xx movement family. Known for its durability and straightforward construction, the Cal. 1520 was widely used across Rolex’s non-chronometer models of the era and is particularly associated with the Ref. 5500 Air-King.
The watch is fitted with an updated stainless-steel Rolex Oyster bracelet, complementing the utilitarian character of the Oyster case. Comes with 11 links total, one short. Fits up to a 7 inch wrist nicely.

Condition
The stainless-steel case retains a pleasing profile with visible surface scratches, small marks and general wear throughout, most notably along the polished bezel and case sides. The lugs remain well defined, although the watch appears to have received polishing during its lifetime.
The silver dial is very well preserved overall, displaying light, even aging and subtle patina. There are some small age-related marks and discoloration visible around the perimeter and hour markers, consistent with a vintage example. The applied baton hour markers and hands show corresponding signs of age, while the printed Rolex and Air-King signatures remain crisp and clearly legible.
The acrylic crystal shows light surface wear consistent with use. The Rolex-signed crown displays scratches and wear but remains visually well defined.
The Oyster bracelet shows general surface scratching and wear throughout, particularly on the clasp, with evidence of previous refinishing/brushing. The bracelet appears to remain in good usable condition for its age.
Overall, the watch presents attractively as an honest vintage example, retaining considerable character and showing age-appropriate wear rather than appearing overly restored.
